History of Filmmaking in BC

According to the Vancouver Economic Commission (VEC), the B.C film, television, visual effects, and animation industry has contributed a whopping $18.7 billion to the local economy from 2012 to 2019 on wages alone, not including the indirect benefits on other major sectors such as tourism, accommodation, hospitality, and transportation or the evolving video production needs of the VR and gaming industry.

Looking at 2019 alone, the film industry broke new records, spending more than $4.1 billion in one calendar year. To put this into perspective, the combined revenue from BCLC for 2019 and 2020 only generated $2.53 billion in comparison.
